Distribution Maintenance operates two drop-off repair centres: Harlow, Essex (Southern Depot) and Grantham, Lincolnshire (Northern Depot). Both facilities are open Monday to Friday, 07:30 to 15:30, and handle everything from single-unit welding repairs to full fleet refurbishments.

What does a drop-off repair centre do that on-site repairs cannot?

A drop-off repair centre provides access to workshop-scale equipment that cannot be transported to a customer site. This includes:

• Spray booth for full respray in any colour — company colours, RAL codes, or functional colour-coding by cage type
• High-capacity machinery for large-volume repairs across entire fleets simultaneously
• Dry, secure storage — equipment is kept protected in a monitored facility from drop-off to collection
• Spare parts inventory — a large on-site stock of components means repairs are not delayed waiting for parts

On-site repair engineers carry portable tools and handle common faults — castor replacement, hinge fitting, gate realignment. Structural welding, full refurbishment and spray work require the drop-off centres.

What equipment do you accept at the repair centres?

We accept the following equipment at both Harlow and Grantham:

Roll cages and A-frame cage trolleys — bent frames, broken mesh infill, damaged gates, broken hinges, worn or seized castors. We restore structural integrity using professional-grade welding and replace worn components so the cage leaves the facility safe for heavy loads.

Pallet cages — locking pins, distorted bases, damaged mesh panels. Pallet cages face high stress loads and require careful base and frame alignment to function correctly. We check every unit is structurally sound and safe before it leaves.

Milk trolleys — castor alignment, shelving mechanisms, frame balance. A milk trolley that tracks unevenly or has a loose shelf creates a manual handling risk. Our engineers restore correct tracking and secure every shelf.

Thermotainers — seals, hinges, outer shell, insulation integrity. A Thermotainer that cannot hold temperature is a compliance risk and a financial liability. We repair the structural elements and verify insulation performance before the unit goes back into service.

What does the refurbishment service include?

Refurbishment goes further than a standard repair. A full refurbishment at our centre includes:

1. Strip-down and assessment — every component inspected before any work begins
2. Structural repair — frame welding, gate realignment, base repair
3. Component replacement — castors, hinges, mesh panels, seals
4. Surface preparation — rust removal, cleaning, priming
5. Spray finishing — our purpose-built spray booth applies a high-quality finish in any colour

A refurbished cage or trolley leaves our facility in the same functional condition as a new unit. For businesses with older fleets, refurbishment extends equipment life significantly and is considerably cheaper than full replacement.

Why does colour matter? The spray booth service

Custom colour-spraying is more than an aesthetic choice. The spray booth at our Grantham facility handles full resprays in any RAL colour or company colour specification.

Colour is used operationally to:

• Identify ownership — a cage sprayed in your company colour is immediately identifiable in a shared distribution centre or at a third-party delivery location, reducing loss
• Category coding — different colours for different product types, temperature zones or departments allow staff to identify the correct cage at a glance without reading labels
• Reinforce branding — equipment on your customers’ loading bays and shop floors represents your business

The spray finish also adds a protective layer against corrosion. Equipment that spends time on loading bays or in damp environments benefits from a proper paint finish rather than a degraded, flaking original coating.

What happens to equipment between drop-off and collection?

Between drop-off and collection, your equipment is held in secure, dry storage inside the facility. It does not sit outside exposed to weather. Rain causes rust; standing water damages castor bearings. All equipment arriving at our centres is logged, assessed and stored under cover from the moment it arrives until it is ready for collection.

Security is a priority at both sites. Equipment is stored in a monitored, locked facility. You can drop off a large volume of assets and collect them on a schedule that fits your vehicle routes without having to coordinate around a technician’s availability.

For large fleets, we can stagger work across multiple drop-off visits rather than requiring everything at once.

What modifications can you carry out?

Standard equipment does not always fit a specific operational requirement. Our workshop carries out bespoke modifications including:

• Additional shelves or shelf height changes
• Gate configuration changes — swing, drop-down or removable
• Security features — additional locking points
• Mesh panel changes — different gauge or infill density
• Height adjustments on cage trolleys
• Custom brackets or fittings for specialist loads

Modifications are turned around faster in our own workshop than through a general manufacturer because we hold materials and components in stock and our engineers work specifically on transit equipment.
