The Power of Collapsible Storage Pallets in Seasonal Warehousing

8 September 2025

A collapsible pallet cage is a wire mesh storage unit with a flat steel base and sides that fold down when empty, reducing its storage footprint to a fraction of its upright size. During peak season it holds and transports goods like any standard pallet cage; when demand drops and it is no longer needed, it collapses and stacks, freeing the floor space for other uses.

This makes collapsible pallet cages particularly practical for businesses managing seasonal inventory peaks — Christmas, summer, harvest, promotional events — where storage requirements rise sharply for a period and then fall back.

Distribution Maintenance supplies new and refurbished collapsible pallet cages — also called folding wire pallet cages — from stock at our Harlow and Grantham depots.

What is a collapsible pallet cage?

A collapsible pallet cage — also called a folding pallet cage or wire pallet cage — is a steel-framed storage unit with a flat base and wire mesh sides that hinge down flat when empty. In its upright position it works as a standard pallet cage: goods are loaded through the half drop-down front gate, the unit is moved by forklift, pallet truck or by hand, and it can be stacked when full to use vertical warehouse space.

When empty, the sides fold inward and the unit collapses to a low flat profile. Multiple collapsed units stack on top of each other, meaning a significant number of empty cages can be stored in the space a few upright cages would occupy.

Our new collapsible pallet cage specifications:

  • Width: 1,200mm
  • Depth: 1,000mm
  • Height: 970mm (upright)
  • Wire gauge: 5mm dty – 10mm dty
  • Grid dimensions: 50mm x 120mm
  • Tare weight: 51.8kg
  • Load capacity: 800kg
  • Gate: half drop-down front gate for forklift and hand access

Why does seasonal demand create a storage problem?

Seasonal peaks compress a large volume of additional stock into a warehouse that was sized for average throughput. The result is congestion — aisles blocked, pick paths disrupted, goods stacked in ways that create safety risks, and staff spending time moving things out of the way rather than picking productively.

The standard response is renting additional warehouse space for the peak period. This solves the capacity problem but adds fixed cost for a short window of time.

Collapsible pallet cages offer a different approach. Instead of expanding the warehouse, the same floor space handles more stock during peak by adding cages that stack efficiently when full. When the peak ends, the cages collapse and stack, and the floor space returns to its off-season layout without the cages needing to leave the building.

How do collapsible pallet cages help during peak season?

They stack when full. Fully loaded collapsible pallet cages can be stacked on top of each other, using the warehouse’s vertical space rather than expanding its footprint. For warehouses with height to spare, stacking full cages significantly increases the volume of stock that can be held without additional floor space.

They handle loose and irregular goods. Seasonal stock — fresh produce, fragile promotional items, bulk dry goods — often does not palletise well on flat pallets. The wire mesh sides of a pallet cage contain the load without wrapping or strapping, and goods can be checked through the mesh without opening the cage.

They move on forklifts and pallet trucks. The base of a collapsible pallet cage accepts standard forklift tines. Stock can be moved between receiving, storage and dispatch areas without hand-loading individual items.

They protect goods in transit. The rigid steel frame and wire mesh sides protect goods during internal transport in a way that an open flat pallet does not, reducing breakage on seasonal and fragile stock.

How do collapsible pallet cages help during off-season?

When seasonal demand drops, the empty cage problem begins. Standard fixed-frame cages that cannot collapse take up the same floor space empty as they do full. A warehouse holding 50 empty fixed-frame cages for the next peak season has 50 cage footprints of floor space occupied and unproductive all year.

Collapsible pallet cages address this directly. When empty, the sides fold down and multiple units stack into a small floor area. The exact reduction depends on the unit height and the stacking limit, but the principle is straightforward: collapsed empty cages take up a fraction of the space upright empty cages would.

This allows the warehouse to retain its full seasonal capacity in cage stock without permanently dedicating floor space to empty equipment.

New or refurbished collapsible pallet cages?

New collapsible pallet cages — bright zinc plated, fully collapsible and stackable, with a half drop-down front gate and 800kg load capacity. Available from stock at our Harlow and Grantham depots. View our new pallet cages.

Refurbished collapsible pallet cages — fully refurbished heavy duty folding pallet cages, inspected and rebuilt to working standard. The cost-effective option for expanding an existing fleet or replacing worn units. View our refurbished pallet cages.

Both options are held in stock. Call 01279 883 286 to confirm current availability and pricing.

Can collapsible pallet cages be repaired?

Yes. Distribution Maintenance carries out pallet cage repairs at our facilities in Harlow and Grantham, and our mobile engineers attend sites across the UK. Common repairs include gate mechanism servicing, castor replacement and frame welding.

Repairing a collapsible pallet cage is significantly cheaper than replacing it. A cage with a damaged gate or worn castors that is otherwise structurally sound is worth repairing rather than writing off.

FAQ

What is a collapsible pallet cage?

A collapsible pallet cage is a wire mesh steel storage unit with a flat base and sides that fold down flat when the cage is empty. In use it holds and transports goods like a standard pallet cage; when not needed, it collapses and stacks with other empty units, freeing floor space. Distribution Maintenance supplies them new (zinc plated, 800kg capacity) and refurbished.

How much do collapsible pallet cages reduce empty storage space?

When collapsed and stacked, multiple units fit into the footprint and height that a smaller number of upright units would occupy. The exact ratio depends on the unit height and stacking limit. Contact us to confirm the stacking specification for the units we currently hold in stock.

What is the load capacity of your collapsible pallet cages?

Our new collapsible pallet cages have a load capacity of 800kg. Refurbished units may vary — contact us to confirm the specification of current refurbished stock.

Are collapsible pallet cages compatible with standard forklifts?

Yes. The base accepts standard forklift tines, so units can be moved by counterbalance or reach truck in the same way as a standard pallet.

Do you supply collapsible pallet cages for seasonal use only?

No — the cages are permanent equipment rather than a hire product. Their collapsibility makes them practical for seasonal operations, but they are purchased and owned by the business using them, and remain useful year-round for any application requiring a containment pallet.

Can you repair collapsible pallet cages we already own?

Yes. We carry out pallet cage repairs at our Harlow and Grantham facilities and via mobile engineers across the UK. Contact us to discuss the repair scope and turnaround.
