Roll Cage Accessories: Shelves, Straps, Covers and Castors
A roll cage wears over time. Castors seize, straps go missing, hinges crack and shelf rods bend. Replacing individual components is almost always cheaper than retiring the whole cage. Distribution Maintenance supplies a full range of roll cage accessories and spare parts for standard A-frame roll cages and a wide range of roll containers.
Roll Cage Integral Shelf (DMA 1)
An integral shelf is a hinged metal rod infill shelf that folds down inside the cage to create a second storage tier. When not in use, it folds upward so the full cage height is available for larger loads.
When you need it:
- Moving mixed loads where smaller items would otherwise fall through the base
- Separating layers of product to prevent damage — fragile items on top, heavier items below
- Increasing picks-per-cage by using the full vertical space more efficiently
Roll Cage Straps (DMA 2)
A roll cage strap is a retention device fitted to the inside of the cage frame to stop product shifting or falling during transit. The DMA 2 strap uses a black nylon hook end that clips into the mesh infill at any height.
When you need it:
- Any load that could shift when the cage is moved — grocery, non-food retail and pharmaceutical loads
- Cages operating on multi-drop delivery routes where the cage is opened and closed repeatedly
- As a replacement when straps wear, stretch or go missing from an existing fleet
Roll Cage Cover (DMA 3A)
A weatherproof cage cover fits over the top and sides of a standard A-frame roll cage, protecting the contents from rain, dust and temperature exposure. The DMA 3A cover has a front opening flap for access without removing the entire cover.
When you need it:
- Any operation where cages wait on a loading bay or in a vehicle without a sealed environment
- Food, retail and pharmaceutical distribution where product condition on arrival matters
- Outdoor or cross-dock environments where weather exposure is a consistent risk
Roll Cage Liner (DMA 3B)
A cage liner is an internal insert that lines the inside of the cage, providing a clean, smooth surface between the mesh infill and the contents.
When you need it:
- Soft goods, clothing or bedding that could catch on the mesh wires
- Food and pharmaceutical loads requiring a clean, non-metallic surface contact
- Any load where the cage mesh infill could mark or damage the product
Castors (DMA 4A–4F)
Castors are the most frequently replaced component on a roll cage. They take the full weight of every loaded cage, run over debris, and operate in varied environments. A seized or worn castor significantly increases push force required, raising manual handling injury risk.
We supply 125mm, 4-bolt fitting castors in six specifications:
| Code | Type | Colour |
|---|---|---|
| DMA 4A | Fixed | Red/Grey sandwich |
| DMA 4B | Swivel | Red/Grey sandwich |
| DMA 4C | Swivel braked | Red/Grey sandwich |
| DMA 4D | Fixed | White nylon |
| DMA 4E | Swivel | White PP |
| DMA 4F | Swivel braked | White PP |
Fixed vs swivel: Most roll cages use two fixed rear castors and two swivel front castors. Fixed gives directional stability; swivel gives manoeuvrability.
Braked castors: Lock the wheel to stop the cage rolling when stationary. Required on slopes, loading bays with a camber, or any site with a safety requirement for cage immobilisation.
Colour options: Colour-coded castors identify cage ownership, route or type at a glance. We supply replacement castors to match your existing colour scheme.
When to replace: Castor does not spin freely; flat spot causing juddering; castor mount cracked or bent; switching environments requiring a different castor type.
Nylon Hinges (DMA 5)
Roll cage gates are hinged at the side. The hinge takes repeated stress — gates are opened and closed hundreds of times per week on active cages. The DMA 5 hinge is a blue nylon plastic 25mm x 19mm fitting for standard roll cage gate assemblies.
When you need it:
- Gate does not fold back fully or catches during operation
- Hinge cracked, broken or missing
- Cage being refurbished before returning to service
ID Plates (DMA 6)
An ID plate is an engraved metal nameplate secured to the cage frame identifying the cage owner and individual reference number. Without clear identification, cages are routinely returned to the wrong operator or lost at distribution centres.
Our ID plates are produced using industrial engraving — not printed labels. Engraved plates are permanent and readable after years of outdoor exposure and pressure washing. Available in stainless steel, aluminium, carbon steel and brass.
For operations running Asset Performance Management (APM), barcode labels are used alongside ID plates to link each cage to its individual repair history and cost data.
Keeping your fleet running
Accessories and spare parts are the cheapest way to extend the working life of a roll cage fleet. We recommend a simple quarterly check:
- Castors: do all four spin freely? Any flat spots?
- Gates and hinges: do they open, close and latch without forcing?
- Straps: are all straps present and in good condition?
- Frame: any bent uprights or cracked welds?
Any cage that fails a check should be taken out of service until repaired. Our roll cage repair service covers all common faults at our Harlow and Grantham facilities, or on your site via our mobile repair engineers.
